At this time of year, I develop a bit of an obsession with cranberries. They're just the most beautiful colour, and so festive. But not only that, they are wonderfully tart and tasty. They really do brighten up a dull day. Most recipes I see around this time of year call for dried cranberries, which certainly have their place (like in these cookies) but I actually prefer fresh cranberries where possible. They're not quite as sweet, but they definitely add a little sassy something to your festive baked goods. Last year I made this cranberry croissant pudding countless times, and this year I'm all about these scones. They're just so cute and Christmas-sy, with the fresh orange zest, the tart little cranberries and the nutty, chewy pistachios. Scones really don't last all that long so, in the spirit of the season of giving, be sure to share these amongst your friends as soon as they are baked! They're best served with lashings of clotted cream and a glass of mulled wine, but they also make an excellent desk breakfast or a pot-luck contribution.
